This morning at 10:30 San Diego’s new Mayor Former Congressman Bob Filner will officially introduce his new staff. So far we know that Vince Hall, Vice President for Planned Parenthood, was selected to serve as Chief of Staff and Lena Lewis is servicing as Communications Director. No word yet on a new Chief Operating Officer

A report about San Diego’s homeless will be released today. This report draws its information from an annual homeless outreach event called Project Homeless. Last year we learned that 85 percent of San Diego’s homeless are unemployed, 70% are between 41 and 70 years old, nearly 80% are veterans, and nearly 90% do not report having a substance abuse problem.

We all are anticipating that the San Diego Chargers will officially fire head coach Norv Turner today. After the Charger’s last game of season Turner said in a press conference quote “Obviously, we're going to meet with the team, and I'm sure they'll start looking for a new coach” The team is holding a press conference today at eleven A-M

Overnight San Diego got cold. Downtown at 3:00 AM the tempter was hovering around 42 degrees. Out in the east count a little over an inch of snow fell and some back country roads froze.

And of course today is New Year’s Eve. Partyers will be taking over and law enforcement will out en-mass hunting those drunk drivers.

So take a cab.

On the heels of heavy rains … high winds will be scouring San Diego County today.

The National Weather Service says gusts up to 55 miles an hour will hit our mountains and canyons. A wind advisory is in effect through 2:00 PM.

In La Jolla today Anti-veal activists will be protesting House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi is an investor in several restaurants that serve veal; one of them is in La Jolla. The activists want Pelosi to personally show the public the quote “the “environmental” way to confine and kill a baby calf,”

The protest will be at noon in front of Piatti Restaurant on Avenida de la playa.

And finally … today the Registrar of Voters breaks ground on a new building.

The Registrar says that the new building will be built specifically to handle election needs and improve security while it will also be used for community events when they’re not counting votes.

The Newtown tragedy is hitting home for San Diegans

According to the local A-B-C affiliate one of the victims has local ties. 6-year-old Avielle Richman and her family moved to Newtown last year from San Diego. According to the Connecticut Post one of her favorite things was to ride horses in her pink cowboy boots.

Her funeral is set for Tuesday.

Also … In the wake of the heartbreak at Sandy Hook San Diego’s Mayor, Chief of Police, school officials, and mental health experts are meeting to discuss campus safety. The meeting begins at 9 AM.

In much lighter news a cold front is moving into San Diego.

We are again expecting rain along the coast and snow in our mountains.

At two thirty six this morning a magnitude 6.3 earthquake rattled Southern California. The shaker’s epicenter is at sea about 170 miles South West of San Diego and a little over six miles down. Some San Diegans were woken by the shaking but there are no reports of any damage.

And tonight the Holiday of Lights along the 805 freeway celebrates its 25th anniversary. Overpasses along the freeway are decorated with light in honor of the holidays. This year is the first year that all the lights are energy efficient L-E-D bulbs.

A lawsuit over the environmental impact of Del Mar Fairground expansion has been settled. This morning representatives from the Fairgrounds, Cities of Del Mar and SolanaBeach and the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority will official announce the settlement.  This means that some Fairground expansion can take place and some proposed expansion is postponed for the time being.  Now possible hotel construction is off the table for five years, no electronic sign near the freeway, and some increased traffic safety measures will be put in.

Today San Diego law enforcement will stuff patrol cars with teddy bears and deliver them to Rady Children’s Hospital. The twenty-two year old tradition began with just twelve bears being delivered by Coronado Police Officer Brian Hardy. Today there is a caravan of Police cars each filled to the brim with stuffed animals for the patients and their families.

And tonight at five thirty San Diego winter homeless shelter will host its tree lighting ceremony. The temporary shelter is set up at sixteenth and Newton Avenue and is expected to serve over a thousand people.

Over the next four days the Marines at Camp Pendleton are conducting a series of live fire exercises called Steel Knight. For San Diego it begins with an invasion of the beach at Camp Pendleton. Steel Knight is an annual series of division wide combat exercises that have taken place since the nineteen nineties.

This afternoon Jason Mullaney, a former Navy SEAL, will be arraigned for stealing more than a million dollars from fellow Navy SEAL’s. Mullaney will be accused of coning SEALs and others into investing in his money lending business then transferring the money into his personal accounts.
Potentially he is facing multiple decades in prison
Today there are two Fiscal Cliff protests that will happen in the late afternoon.
The first will be at four P-M at the Vista offices of Congressmen Darrel Issa. Members from the California Nurses Association are going to protest reduction in Medicare and Medicaid because of the fiscal cliff negotiation.
The Second at five thirty P-M at the San Diego offices of Senator Dianne Feinstein. At this one organized labor will share its anger at the proposed cuts to entitlements and demand tax hikes on the wealthy.
